AutoCAD has evolved over time from a desktop graphics program to a comprehensive design and drafting application for a range of machines from desktop PCs to the most powerful engineering workstations. The “first” version of AutoCAD was for the Apple II, which could display a single window in 640×400 resolution and was released in 1982 as AutoCAD (for Apple). During the early 1980s, AutoCAD development was heavily influenced by GrafABC for the Apple II, a commercial tool for drafting circles, arcs and splines, and by other programs.

In 1981, Autodesk launched a beta version of Autocad for the IBM PC; Autocad for IBM PC was the first widely used, commercialized CAD application for the PC, and the first software available on any market to become a mainstream success.

AutoCAD for IBM PC was significantly different from GrafABC, and also, in contrast to the Apple II, it was not a freeware product but required an operating system and copy of the BIOS; it was also available as a 32-bit version.

Autocad for the IBM PC shipped with a command line interface for operating in batch mode. As a result, in the early days of AutoCAD, users had to use batch files and DOS commands to work in the program.

The first releases of AutoCAD for IBM PC in the early 1980s were significantly different from what was shipped for the Apple II. In particular, the IBM PC version was not a classic desktop program, but an application that ran from the IBM PC’s hard disk drive. In the early 1980s, few computers had hard disks; most of the machines in common use were minicomputers, which typically used cassette drives, floppy disks or ZIP drives as their primary storage.

The final version of AutoCAD for the IBM PC was released in 1984, and made the transition to run on the DOS 2.0 operating system.

In the years that followed, more computer models and operating systems supported CAD applications and design tools. In 1985, HP released the first computer with a built-in graphics chip that could handle large amounts of data and run applications such as AutoCAD.

In 1992, HP released AutoCAD for Windows 95, marking the introduction of CAD-oriented Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) on personal computers.

Over the following years, AutoCAD underwent several major upgrades and enhancements

3D modeling, engineering and visualizing
Autodesk 3ds Max is a very popular 3D modeling program in the CAD industry.
AutoCAD LT, a free and open-source program, is based on AutoLISP and Visual LISP and runs on Windows 95 and Windows NT.

Video and multimedia
Autodesk Maya is a popular 3D animation and visual effects tool based on 3ds Max.

Formerly, Autodesk also offered several other digital media authoring tools. In 2010, Autodesk acquired animation company,

Navigation in Autodesk Inventor is based on Inventor’s Digital Modeling module. This module allows linking features, allowing a user to navigate between two specific points. Navigation between two features is also possible if the two features are connected. Many features have their own templates which can also be used for navigation. The most common navigation is Select → Link by geometry. In the process of linking, the size of the feature which the user is linking is not modified. If the user clicks on a feature and then selects Link by geometry, the user’s cursor is replaced by an orange arrow that can be moved through the selected object. The feature the user is linking is shown by the orange line, and the center of the line matches the cursor position. Another method of navigating is Select → Link by feature, with the advantage of also linking features which have the same name. For each named link, an attribute such as Link Type or Distance to Origin may be set, and if this is not given, it will inherit the link type and distance of the linked feature. The user can move the orange arrow through the whole linked feature without any information. If it has a template, this can also be used to link features.

User interface
In 1991, Autodesk Inventor had a browser-based user interface for viewing, editing, and tracking the documentation for models and components. The user interface was used to access Inventor documentation which was organized into dialogs.

Interface 2
On June 25, 2010, Autodesk released Inventor Interface 2, which is the default UI for Inventor. With a completely new user interface, it provides an improved user experience for creating, viewing and editing models.

Interface 3
The UI Interface 3 was released on October 28, 2011, with an improved interface and more user-friendly software. The main features of the

What’s New in the AutoCAD?

Design software has made great strides over the past few years in incorporating feedback from a wide variety of external and internal sources, including paper and PDF documents, additional 2D files, and data from objects. The AutoCAD Markup Assistant takes that feedback and helps you make the most of it. You can import that feedback into any of your AutoCAD drawings and annotations, and even into other CAD applications such as 3D CAD or 3D printing software. Once you import the feedback, you can incorporate it into your designs using the Markup Assistant, including: Editing: The Markup Assistant assists you in merging, combining, merging, splitting, and splitting objects or components into other components or objects. Drawing: The Markup Assistant helps you create a more precise, less common or frequent drawing element and to keep the drawing consistent across the entire drawing set. Annotations: The Markup Assistant will show you changes that have been made to your drawing, based on the previous state of your drawing. You can review them and modify them, including changing or adding comments. This is especially useful for objects that you’re using multiple times throughout your drawings. Autocomplete: The Markup Assistant will show you where the components or objects that you select or create are used throughout the drawing. A final, automatic edit will produce your desired result. Insert: The Markup Assistant will offer you many options to create and insert components into your drawings, including: components from the component library

custom components from 2D or 3D files

individual objects from 2D or 3D files

component families from the component library

individual objects from the component library

In addition, the Markup Assistant will suggest the most compatible component or object for you, based on a variety of factors, including: The scope of the markups

The type of document, such as a PDF or word processing file

The kind of drawing element

The drawing style, layout, and orientation The Markup Assistant can use the most relevant components and make the final edit for you, either by giving you a pick list of the most suitable options or by making suggestions for you.

Markup Workflow Management:

One of the most frustrating parts of AutoCAD is that you typically need to do the following steps for every drawing: Create a new drawing and set the dimensions, style, and other desired options

Set up the drawing for tagging, arrows, or notes

Create the drawing
